Hot off the heels of his latest hit with Taylor Swift, “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” former One Direction member, Zayn Malik, follows it up with “Still Got Time” featuring PARTYNEXTDOOR.  The song is right on trend with current pop music, which is its biggest flaw.  We can’t even tell who is singing this song, as Zayn does not use his falsetto once on the track, instead going with a sloppy Drake impersonation after smoking a carton of cigarettes.  When he finally does start showing off his vocal chops, the song ends, leaving us with a too little, too late feeling.

The instrumentation is yet another off-shoot of the dreaded trop-pop craze that has plagued pop music for the past year.  I will say that the beat is actually quite catchy, but would have been better utilized on a song that wasn’t such a “One Dance” knockoff.  The one highlight would actually be PARTYNEXTDOOR, which isn’t saying much since he simply turns the song into “Run Up” Part 2, his recent single with Major Lazer and Nicki Minaj.

Is it just me or does Zayn sound sad throughout the entire song?  With optimistic lyrics and a joyous backbeat, you’d think Zayn’s vocals would at least have a neutral tone, but no, it sounds like he’s either bored or on the verge of tears the entire time.  While Zayn is one of the most promising male pop stars in the game at the moment, “Still Got Time” is not doing him any favors.  It’ll be background fodder for club DJs for the next month and then fade to the background as quickly as it appeared and that’s if it’s lucky.
